Product Description NEW YORK YANKEES FALL CLASSIC, THE:COLLE
Amazon.com The New York Yankees Fall Classic Collector's Edition 1996-2001 is the perfect counterargument for Yankees fans who've gotten tired of cocky Red Sox fans bragging about their comprehensive 2004 World Series DVD set. Sure, Boston finally broke its curse and in the process branded the Bronx Bombers as the greatest chokers in sports history. But let's not forget that it was the Yankees who won four of the last five World Series of the 20th century--1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000--and if this seven-disc set doesn't include every game of every series like the Red Sox set... well, that's because there are simply too many championships to cover here. What you get instead is a single complete World Series game from the four championship years, each on a single disc, and as originally broadcast on TV minus commercials: the 1996 game 4 vs. the Atlanta Braves, in which Jim Leyritz's late home run was the key to a big comeback; the 1998 game 3 vs. the San Diego Padres, in which Scott Brosius's two homers were the key to another late comeback; the 1999 game 3 vs. Atlanta, won by Chad Curtis's 10th-inning homer; and the 2000 "Subway series" game 5 clincher vs. the Mets. The fifth complete game included is the 2001 game 4 vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Yankees' late home runs off Byung Hyun-Kim are certainly part of great Yankee lore (and the 9/11 attacks that year made the Yankees a rare sympathetic figure), but when the usually automatic Mariano Rivera blew the save in game 7, the Yankees' dominating run ended, and many of the classiest Yanks such as Paul O'Neill began to retire. Accompanying the five game discs are two bonus discs that contain the original Major League Baseball World Series highlight films from 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000. They provide an hourlong overview of each series and are a reminder of the only way people used to be able to watch baseball on home video. Also included are a variety of other memorable clips from post-season and otherwise. For example, there's a two-minute clip of the famous "Jeter flip," which snuffed out an Oakland rally in the 2001 AL division series. There's a six-minute clip of Roger Clemens's 2000 playoff game against Seattle, which includes 15 third strikes, announcer reactions, and the high-and-tight pitch that knocked down then-Mariner Alex Rodriguez and was generally credited with setting the tone of the game. In addition, each disc comes with SleeveStats, incorporating box scores, inning-by-inning line scores, team rosters, and other factoids into the packaging. All in all, it's an amazing 14-hour keepsake of one of sports' greatest modern dynasties. --David Horiuchi

What only 7 discs????? October 15, 2005 Phil Speranza (Staten Island, NY USA) 26 out of 28 found this review helpful
Make some room on your DVD shelf next to your Yankeeographys because MLB Productions have a hit on their hands. They answered the 2004 Boston Red Sox box set with a Yankee compilation that was second to none.
While the Red Sox set included only the 2004 World Series the Yankees collection includes some of the greatest World Series Games of the Joe Torre Era. The Red Sox set is guaranteed to last 86 years so it should keep the Sox fans happy for a long time. This set includes five complete World Series Games, all of which are Yankee victories of course. And if that wasn't enough, in addition to the complete games there are two bonus disks.
As exciting as the complete games are, unfortunately it doesn't include John Sterling and Michael Kay like the YES Network Yankee Classics do. It does include the original national broadcasts, which has commentators that feature Bob Costas, Joe Buck, Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan. The picture couldn't be sharper and it does seem to be a full featured DVD as opposed to some past releases.
The full games included 1996 Game 4 which features Jimmy Leyritz leading the Yanks back from a 6-0 deficit to a 8-6 extra inning triumph that tied the series at 2 all. The next game is another come from behind victory. The third game of the 1998 series features the Bombers beating San Diego ace reliever Trevor Hoffman.
The third complete game is another game three, this one again against the Braves that features a walk off homer by Chad Curtis. Mariano Rivera took a win this time around instead of his usual save. The forth complete game DVD is a Game 5 series ender against the Mets in 2000, the first Subway Series since 1956. The Yankees won it in the top of the ninth on a single by super sub Louie Sojo. Mike Stanton got the win in relief of Andy Pettitte. The loss went to former Yankee farmhand Al Leiter.
The final complete game while a Yankee victory is unusual in the fact that the Yankees lost this series to the Arizona Diamondbacks. What made this game unique was that this was the 911-year and due to the suspension of baseball that year at midnight of that game it became November. It was the first baseball game played in November. And Derek Jeter homered in the bottom of the tenth thus becoming the first "Mr. November".
The two Bonus DVDs are worth the price of admission on their own. They include all the MLB World Series videos plus a plethora of bonus footage that includes Roger "Rocket" Clemens 2000 ALSC game 4 masterpiece. Other inclusions are highlights from Gooden's No Hitter, David Cone's and David Well's Perfect Games, Jeter's ALDS series saving flip, and many other highlights by names like David Justice, Jim Leyritz, and Paul O'Neill. There is abundance of behind the scenes footage that includes locker room, interviews and press conferences and much, much more.
The packaging is a Trivia Buffs delight as it is full of boxscores, highlights and facts. It will jar your memory reading the cases alone.
These disks are a must have for Yankee fans. As soon as I posted the banners I saw many of you pre order these fine DVDs. So what are the rest of you waiting for?
A Must Have For Yankee Fans October 10, 2005 Eric Paddon (Morristown, NJ) 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
The only regret I have about this DVD set is that it isn't as big as, or bigger than MLB's overly indulgent 2004 Red Sox set. The five games selected for presentation in this set are fascinating to see in quality more pristine than any Yankee fan's off-air recording might be, but the set IMO could easily have included five more games from this era, including notable ALDS and ALCS games as well.
The truly nice thing is that in presenting these game broadcasts, we get them unedited. The FOX and NBC graphics are left intact as are the promos for other shows, all of which usually gets cut out of ESPN Classic replays. Chapter stops are conveniently keyed to individual half innings which is very helpful for accessing key moments of the games.
The supplementary material also makes this set a must-have. The 2000 WS was the last official highlights video to be released in VHS only at the time it came out, so Yankee fans can now for the first time have the four WS highlight videos of 96-98-99-00 in a better format. Also, in contrast to the supplementary material one finds in the Yankeeography discs, key games like the Wells and Cone perfect games are spotlighted with up to a full half inning of action rather than just one batter's worth of action.
Yankee fans should pick this up and hope that MLB might do a Volume 2 set devoted to this great era of the Yankee dynasty sometime in the future.
